Description

This is an exciting step for me, in that this image was taken with my new Raspberry Pi computer running Stellarmate OS (Ekos/KStars) with indi connections to my equipment. In my quest for a simple, portable setup, I have spent several, sometimes frustrating hours, setting this up, working through quirks , or are they quarks , but I now have a truly portable system. I use a 5V 3A converter, together with my iPad connected to Stellarmate's wifi hotspot to control the RPi4 , using the App and/or VNC connection. There are many advantages to this, not least that I can sit indoors, and don't have to carry around my ageing laptop and accompanying paraphernalia. Once polar aligned, I am able to plate solve to find my target, sequence images and control my Star Adventurer mount from my iPad. I have not managed to get the internal guider to work on the App, but this does work over VNC (in this image I used PHD built into EKOS).

The images are saved to the SD card and I can then pull these off for processing. I made flats and darks in Stellarmate (Ekos) and then calibrated these in Nebulosity, before processing in Startools. As described in this revision I have pushed deconvolution using the algorithms in Startools 1.8, which appear every bit as powerful as those recently released in the 'blur exterminator' tool for PixInsight.

Another small step...
…but no giant leap.

[postscript] Unfortunately try as I may, auto guiding using the inbuilt guider, or PHD is proving very flaky. Mostly it throws up errors ‘cannot download image’ when looping, or crashes the guide camera, occasionally I’ve managed to get PHD to work. Obviously without this I am limited to short exposures. It may be my aged Orion SSAG although this works flawlessly with the native driver in APT (Windows). I will try another guide camera, but for the moment I’m going back to my old, but trusty laptop - shame.

Title: Maximum deconvolution

Description: It may not be the magic 'blur exterminator' but this is the equivalent, already built into Startools. I think I could be more aggressive with this feature in future. I have not used any noise reduction in this image.
